"The Flats"

Late season deer. "The Flats" a plateau over looking a lake. A square patch of doug firs bordered a meadow with young reprod. On the edge of the meadow in the timber, i encountered 21 deer in 5 days (3 bucks). "Mount Sinaloa" - Big bruiser track in the snow, trail led from saddle to clear cut. I think this was the buck that made those two rub lines. 2 mikes off the trail in the Sinaloa mountains, I hung a tree stand and trail cam for next season. I'm hoping to find a monster buck or bull somewhere in the dark timber.

Fork & Horn.

1030, Low 40s mid 30s, light showers mixed with snow. Into the wind, I walked a draw up the ridge. Along the ridge I watched 3 does stare at me, then trot up and over the knob. When I arrived to the tree stand, I blew 3-4 fawn bleat calls. After my second round of calling, I watched the does leap frog into the patch of timber where I sat. Two would eat, one would keep watch as the moved along the ridge. They fed within 30 yards before disappearing. They were feeding towards the clear cut (1600). *A few days ago I jumped the trio about 100 yards in the timber from the clear cut, on the W side of the trail (1400).* 28 November 2017 The clear cut is becoming more essential to the hunt each day. I arrived to the AO at 1300. Conditions: Fog & snow. *The same area I bumped the does, except on the E side of the trail, I encountered my first legal buck.* When I entered the timber from the clear cut I decided to nock an arrow. I was no more than 100 yards into the timber when a f...

Late Season Blacktail Buck - Archery

November 22, 2017. Temperature 45-55F, rain.  First day of late season archery, boots on the ground at 0700. From the E, wind was blowing up the clear cut from the basin, so I had to ascend the ridge from the NW, up a draw to stay up wind of the AOR.  Lots of fresh scat and random rubs were found walking up the draw. On a little bench that let to a saddle, on top of the ridge, I found a hot rub line. I walked the ridge and around 1100 I encountered 2 big mature blackmail does. They were walking down the draw on the W face of the ridge. They didn't spook, but stood there staring awkwardly for at least 5 minutes. I didn't try to alarm them, and they didn't seem worry too much. Both does kept looking down the draw as if there was another deer, but I never saw anything. Before I knew it, both vanished into thin air without a sound. I continued on my way and met the clear cut, then worked my way down its edge about 20 yards in the timber. All the way down...

"Mount Sinaloa"

November 21, 2017. The Late Season. I chose a ridge along the western slope of the Cascades to hunt blacktail deer. Ruthless wind, snow, and NW signature rain gave the AO the name "Mount Sinaloa." The area contains a clear cut that drops down to a basin, bordered by old growth timber. I will park the truck on opposite side of the mountain around 2000 ft elevation, and start my stalk through the dark timber. The peak is a little over 2800 ft. I will conduct my experience through trail cams and boots on the ground. Trail camera location: End of a finger ridge around 2400 ft. November 18 @ 0733, 33 degrees, clear sky. A doe cautiously walking down the finger ridge. 15 minutes later, a herd of elk (10+) were feeding right behind her. @1503, 2+ elk were feeding up the ridge. November 19, 0926, 35 degrees, sunny. Same elk herd feeding up the ridge.

BJJ Journal

Breaking the guard - 2 on 1 Russian tie. Control opponent with 2 on 1 at his elbow and wrist, and pin him to the ground with it. While driving into him, walk him all the way up to top of his back, and get your hips under his. Move from 2-1 to double cliff hanger, then lift opponent off the ground. Break the guard by stepping back and pushing the knee out. Pinch one of the opponents legs, the side you want to pass. Let go of the arm and move to same side collar. Side hop, forehead driving into sternum and back step over into side control.

BJJ Journal ~ Breaking the full guard

Breaking someones closed guard, begins with maintaining a strong base.  Place palm on opponents diaphragm and maintain constant pressure. With the other hand grab GI trouser at hip flexor and dig the same side elbow into their thigh, while the opposite knee stays outside their hip. Now with the elbow digging in, slide the same side leg back to break the guard. If needed, move from elbow to hand on the inside of the knee and push it to the mat, at the same time shuffle step and staple  their leg to mat.  Choose the pass.

Finding the Flock

October 7, 2017. @1100, Sunny 60 degrees. After 2 days of searching, finally glassed a flock of 13 turkey feeding down a south facing slope/ field to a  creek drainage, the same one creek elk were feeding up. They stayed on private land.

Rocky Mountain Elk

October 7, 2017. @0800. Sunny 60 degrees.  Walking along a north facing ridge on a dirt road, we saw a herd of elk walking up the draw from a open field to the top of the ridge, where we found lots of beds. They were traveling along one of the only creeks that held a little bit of water. My lady & I saw 8 cows & a 5x5 herd bull. The herd bull was leading the herd from the rear. After the herd was running up the ridge, a solo cow trailed behind and kept eyes on us until the rest fled.

East of the Cascades.

October 6, 2017. @1130. Cloudy, 60 degrees. On a north facing ridge 80 yards away, stood a big 3x4 whitetail buck feeding on a finger. He stood up and stared at my lady & I for about 5 min before he ever moved his head. When I ducked down he spooked & bounced out.  Across the draw, we glassed 4 does feeding into the draw into a creek. We watched them feed unalarmed, but they were always on watch & listening.

The Bark.

September 14, 2017. Hot sunny day, mid 70's. @1430. I decided to let a day pass and go back down into the canyon. The bull was bedded on the same north facing slope, same contour line, except 1/4 mile sooner on the ski trail I was on. This time he was sleeping in front of a patch of willows and he didn't wake up until I had already passed him about 20 feet. He stormed down the ridge, sounding like a train ripping through the forest. As soon has he got up the adjacent ridge, he turned around and sounded off a high pitched bark. It was a thrilling experience. I think he was letting me know that he pegged me as a human. The bull didn't give me a third chance.

Elk & the willows.

Go bySeptember 15, 2017 @0700. Sunny morning, 60 degrees. Entered the canyon from the bottom this time and jumped three bedded elk in between two creek beds @2800ft elevation. They were bedded behind some Willow brush about 5-10 ft off the backcountry ski trail. I found a fresh pair of tracks leading right to where they crossed the trail to their bed.

Missed Bull.

14 September 2017 @0900. Sunny morning 60 degrees. The herd returned to the same location to feed and were bumped by a hunter. The herd ran across the meadow, and up the ridge about 200 yards away. I tried to cut them off but they were gone. I worked my way across the ridge in the direction they were headed. @1100 I heard a branch break coming up the ridge. I was up wind,  found a shooting lane, and sat in front of smaller bush. A 3x4 bull walked 10 feet in front of me, big black eyes, sucking in every scent through his huge nostrils. The bull walked in the direction the herd went without ever scenting or seeing me.

The Mature Bull.

September 12, 2017 @ 1430. Temperature high 70s. At the bottom of the pass, jumped a bedded 6x6 on the north phasing slope along a creek bed. The bull was bedded about 60 yards above the creek next to a wallow. He slept in front of a down tree that provided him back cover, and a full view of anything coming up the creek. I found a fresh set of tracks on the back country ski trail, and followed them straight to his bed. The bull spooked at 20 yards when my buddy & I we're almost right above him. He bedded about 10 yards off the trail.

Early season bulls.

September 8, 2017 @ 1530. Temperature: mid 70s - mid 50s. My buddy and I glassed two bulls, a 4x4 & 6x6. They were leaving a patch of timber at the bottom of a north facing ridge. They wandered around the middle for a while, then fed towards a timber patch that led to another meadow. Around 1830, two hunters spooked the bulls and they ran across the meadow into the timber to never be seen again.

"The more work, sacrifice, and dedication you offer up in the name of bow hunting, the more success you will have." Cameron Hanes The wilderness gives an exhilarating sense of freedom and adventure known nowhere else. A land where it's man against the elements.     A good relationship with your gear through training will enhance the experience in the backcountry. This training op was to help identify any deficiencies with my ruck. I used the aquamira drops to filter water for the first time and it worked great, and super light. Also I didn't bring a tent because I knew it wasnt going to rain. Instead I brought a woobie for the ground, sleeping pad, and sleeping bag. I had a poncho in case it did rain.  Beautiful Soa with 2 Cubs. Only 1 cub is showing.  A few buddies from my fire department in the military camped in a basin along some high country lakes. We rucked 8 miles round trip and gained 2000ft in elevation.

BJJ Journal: Butterfly Guard

Opponent steps up while keeping top of foot behind knee and other foot hooks behind on hamstring. One hand on ankle and the other on lapel as leash. Slide into de la Riva. Then slide into X- guard. #1. Opponent leans back, so you extend both legs while pulling ankle, and push at lapel, and keep the lapel and the cuff. BJJ Journal: Scissor Sweep

Instructor Aeim, Scissor sweep, instead of block on the out side of the knee, push at the bottom of the knee when you pull opponent on top of you. Head control choke from guard - pull opponent down with legs, cross collar and grab up high and elbow up, pull head down. Pull from the top of the head. 3 - 6 minute rounds.

Wildrose Training

Diversions returning from the retrieve continued. Today I decided to test Scout's discipline with another diversion, his big brother Crash. With both dogs at heel, toss one bumper and give the commands no, leave, then heel and walk about 50 yards. Sit to the flush drill (blow the sit command with the whistle), toss another bumper short in front of both dogs. "No, leave." Then point to the original bumper and send both dogs for the retrieve. Scout would come back with the retrieve and put him at heel/ sit. Walk over for the denial and pick up the diversion bumper.  Flush drills, denials. Denials help honor the retrieve. Then threw the kong around for fun time. A different release word is used in play time, than the one used in training/ hunting.

BJJ Journal: Promotions

Wildrose Training: Diversions

The 7 core gundog skills:   1. OBEDIENCE 2. STEADINESS AND HONORING 3. DELIVERY TO HAND 4. LINING MEMORIES 5. HANDLING 6. HUNTING COVER 7. MARKING My boy Scout is almost 15 months old and he is a Chocolate Lab. He has been following the Wildrose Way training program. This year will be both of our first hunting season and its been an awesome experience researching and training my boy to be my hunting partner. Still focusing on the basics, I am engraving the first 4/7 gun dog skills; Obedience, Steadiness & honoring, Delivery to hand, Lining Memories. Steadiness training: Diversions - Diversions are forms of steadiness, that is, no switching from one downed bird to another. In training and on the hunt, a dog will encounter countless distractions. In each situation, the dog should remain focused on the retrieve at hand, not on the diversion 3 types of diversions: 1. Returning from the retrieve: As youngster returns with the bumper, thr...

Summer Scouting

Arrived mid day, saw a few other outdoor enthusiasts but not too many. We set up camp on top of a peak where we were able to glass some open meadow. Conditioning/ Hiked along one of the main trails for a couple of miles. We found lots of small meadows tucked into the dense timber. The meadow had massive elk tracks and bed areas.  We saw one black tail doe feeding in a different meadow. There was a ton of big game traffic throughout the area. I noticed lion scat was common and large piles filled with fawn & elk calf hair. We found some bear scat about 2 miles from the spot the dogs and I spooked that big bore.  Need to cut a trail from camp down the logs on the SE side of the peak. Round trip from camp to the intersecting trail way was 5.5 miles.

BJJ Journal: Single Leg X

The hardest thing in the world is to be ourselves. Who are we? Our family tells us, society tells us, laws and customs tell us. But what do we say? How do we get to that place of self-knowledge and conviction where we are able to state without doubt, fear or anger, “This is who I am, this is what I believe, this is how I intend to live my life”? ~ Steven Pressfield  Gym: The Base Jiu Jitsu taught by Professor Dealy   TRAINING LOG: • Single Leg X flow drills. Partner standing over your chest.
